Preferences

You can access the preferences page in Welcome by either entering ../pi_admin.welcome?prefs or by clicking on "Preferences". There are different sections and each section is divided by a horrizontal line:

Debug Mode
You can turn Debug Mode on if you are searching for a problem with Welcome. Normally, you will not use this mode unless you are told to do so, or if encounter problems with Welcome. You can choose between "just in/out Logging" and "full Information". The first is usefull if your server hangs or crashes. It will write an "IN" each time Welcome is starting to operate into the log window of your server and an "OUT" if Welcome is done with processing. Therefore, if your server crashes and the last word in your log window is "OUT" - it is not Welcome's fault.
Full debugging mode will slow down your server alot, so use it with care. In this mode, Welcome will put verbose descripions on what's going on internally into the log window.

Switching parts of Welcome on and off
In this section, you can turn Virtual Hosting and Rules on and off. This is usefull if you need only one part of Welcome (e.g. if your server already has built-in virtual hosting). Use Rules on/off to quickly enable/disable all Rules for testing purpose.

Temporary host folder
With this setting, you can customize the name of a temporary host folder. Welcome uses this string for every request to a host without subfolder (only for older browsers). Without this string, Welcome cannot decide if a client has already been processed by the click-through page - resulting in an endless loop of click-through pages. To prevent this, the name of this temporary host folder is appended after clicking in the click-through page and the name will be cut away internally, so you don't have to create that folder. It's just used as a marker for old browsers requesting a virtual host without subfolder.
Set this field to any text you like. Short strings like "/web"or "/main" are usefull.

Disable Click Through Page
If you don't like the click-through page, you can just skip it by selecting this option. However, beware that old browsers requesting a long and deep path will loose their destination page by using the host list. They will go straight to the home page and will have to find their way to the wanted page again! The click-through page can determine the host from the referer and will point the old browser directly to the destination - with only one click!

Statistics
In this section, you can define all settings for the color stats. If you have a plugin-window enabled server (like WebSTAR 2.1 or Telefinder) you already have seen that stats window on your server. If you can't, there is another way to watch your stats remotely: request a JPEG picture of the internal graphics buffer.

Options:

Statistics enabled
You can turn the stats on and off (saving 500KB of memory). Beware that Welcome cannot save the old stats if you turn them off and on again.

Statistic Units
With this group of buttons, you can control the units of the two fields below

Select one of the 5 possible unit combinations and fill in the two fields with your prefered values. Here are some usefull combinations:

  • "1 secs / 1 min" - a basic setup that will scroll fast and shows you the last 7 minutes of activity
  • "30 secs / 60 min" - a somehow longer interval of about 4 hours grouped by 1 hour sections
  • "2 hour / 2 day" - shows you the recent 32 days and each light/dark section represents 2 days

The first field is the scrolling unit. Each horrizontal pixel at the color stats will represent one unit. Also the stats are updated in the same time interval. The second field will control the time for a light/dark gray section and is only cosmetic. It has no directly affect on how stats are processed, but simply controls the width of the horrizontal labels.

Attention:
Take care, that any changes to stats settings will reset your current color stats.
However, Welcome saves the color stats between server restarts, but not if your server crashes.

Access for JPEG Statistics
This option controls the access url for the jpeg stats. You can either choose the first url (pi_admin_stats.welcome?n) and restrict access to the server administrator or make the stats public by choosing the second url (stats.welcome?n). The default is set to private.

Reset Statistics
This link will reset the text statistics (not the color stats). This includes all values that are shown at the home page of Welcome (e.g. the percentage of old browsers). You might want to reset those stats because Welcome saves these values between server restarts.
